Oscars 2016 – Style Watch

The Academy Awards is one of my favorite nights of the year.  The glitz and glamour.  Star gazing and day dreaming.  There are a lot of dynamics that go into the Oscars each year, but one thing I look forward to the most is the fashion.

Oscars fashion can usually predict on trend styles for the rest of the year.  This year, however, there was not one particular style that went above and beyond what we can foresee for the rest of the season. There were a lot of different styles from plunging necklines to tiered skirts. Colors varied and jewels were almost non-existent. So, what were some of the favorite fashions this year?

I’ve done a bit of researching to see what us fashion junkies love and I’ve compiled my list of top 10 favorites.  If you don’t agree or have a different preference, let me know!  Here we go!

10. Cate Blanchett.  As much as I love her, this dress was not my favorite.  However, I love how this Armani Prive’ looked like something right from a fairy tale and reminded me of her role in Disney’s Cinderella.  This sea foam green dress was studded with Swarovski crystals.

9.  Saoirse Ronan.  Although the beaded pattern of this Calvin Klein Collection is not my favorite, I loved how tightly this emerald green dress fit this Irish actress.  My favorite addition to this look is the intentionally mismatched Chopard earrings.

8.  Brie Larson.  The Academy Award winning actress wore a regal blue ball gown style Gucci dress which she said was an organic fit to how she wanted to feel on her big night.  I love this dress, I was lost, however, at the pearl encrusted belt.

7. Tina Fey and Reese Witherspoon.  I had trouble choosing between these two because, well, it’s pretty obvious.  The purple dresses are nearly identical.  Reese’s custom silk Oscar de la Renta was accessorized  with Tiffany and Co. diamonds.  Tina’s completed the look of her fishtail gown with Bulgari jewels. I guess the biggest question is, who wore it better?

6. Jennifer Lawrence. I expected something a little more fun from the Academy Award winning actress, but she still looked gorgeous.  Her sheer black silk gown from Dior Haute Couture looked great and paired beautifully with her Chopard jewels.  Perfectly simple and sexy.

5. Rachel McAdams.  The best actress nominee wore a backless halter-neck dress by August Getty Atelier.  I thought she looked amazing.  She would’ve been higher on my list, but the fabric of this dress was not great.  Just look at how it wrinkled on the red carpet. I’m sure by the end of the night she needed to have someone with a steamer follow her around.

4. Olivia Munn. I’m not normally a fan or orange, but if you can pull it off, go for it!  I think she looked amazing in the Stella McCartney gown with the one shoulder caped neckline.  So minimalist.

3.  Jennifer Garner. The Oscar presenter wore a black Atelier Versace dress which featured an asymmetrical neckline, half embellished bodice, and draped skirt.  This look was flattering and perfect for the 43 year old actress.  Eat your heart out, Ben!

2.  Alicia Vikander.  The Award winning actress said of her butter yellow Louis Vuitton dress “I think if you would’ve asked 5-year-old Alicia what her biggest dream was, it was probably to be Belle in Beauty and the Beast.”  I couldn’t agree more!  And besides, if you can pull off a butter  yellow ball gown, you deserve to be treated like a princess.

1. Charlize Theron.  Few people can pull off a plunging neckline like this.  The Oscar winning actress stunned in her red Dior Haute Couture, but I think the nearly $4 million Harry Winston diamonds completed the ensemble.

Airport Style

Who knew this was a thing?  Until very recently, I tried to avoid airports at all costs.  Not airports necessarily, but flying.  I’m a nervous flyer.  I have new-found coping skills, however, that make flying just a little more bearable.  And discovering new fashion trends via airport style has made it a bit more fun.  With my recent job transition, I will be spending some time at airports, so I’ve compiled a list of fashion trends that will make my escapades and escapes more like a fashion runway than an airport runway.

1. There’s no need to sacrifice fashion for comfort.  The perfect go to staple for airplane travel is skinny jeans.  I want to be able to move once I leave the plane and hit the airport, so I prefer the stretchy kind.  Another new favorite of  mine are “fancy” sweatpants, although I’m pretty sure that’s not what they’re actually called.  Both skinny jeans and “fancy” sweats can be paired with either a cute flat or, my favorite, a wedge heel.

2. Which brings me to my next point, SHOES!  For airport style, it’s important to be able to get those beauties off at a moment’s notice thanks to the TSA.  I find flats and wedges to be the most effective and either type of shoe can go with almost anything from jeans to maxi skirts.  To avoid having to pack too many pairs of shoes, though this is truly a hazard for me, try to find a pair that goes with just about anything in your suitcase.

3. Layers are crucial when traveling.  I live in Seattle, so it’s, more often than not, raining anytime I leave to travel somewhere.  I adjust for the change in climates by wearing layers, but avoiding coats.  It’s usually a t-shirt, sweater or lightweight jacket and a scarf.  This also helps me to keep warm on my flight and I can usually stow a layer in my small bag when I land, if I need to.

4. Sunglasses.  I learned this the hard way.  I always like to wear minimal makeup when traveling.  I think planes are dirty and being around so many people at once is dirtier, so traveling with light makeup is key since I know I’ll be cleaning up after I land.  But when I stumbled upon Chris Evans, aka Captain America, last week sans makeup, I decided that minimal makeup isn’t always the best idea.  My solution?  Travel with sunglasses at the ready.  This way I can still go eau natural, but hide my face with my cute aviators if I need to!

5.  Let your bags work for you.  You’re carrying around a portion of your closet, so why not make it a cute closet?  With keeping your wardrobe minimal, you can do it up bold with your bag!

Have fun traveling in style!  And watch for some favorite looks of your own whilst traveling.  If you have feedback or favorites, let me know!

For the first time in about 8 years….

I did a craft!  Notice the excitement in my tone?  That’s right, I, the most unsuccessful, least crafty mom you will ever meet, did a craft!  AND, not just one craft, but 3!

Now, this may not seem like a big deal to most mommies.  In fact, it’s pretty common within the mommy-community.  But like I said before, I have never been your typical SAHM mom.  Even when I was a SAHM with just two kids, the most I ever did was decorate cookies, and they were usually the Pillsbury ones that are already cut out with the frosting that looks like toothpaste (I cringe as I actually admit to that).  And I’m pretty genetically inclined to be crafty.  My mom was the macrame queen (yes, I grew up in the 70’s) and my sister could scrapbook and sew dresses in her sleep.

Being the not-so-crafty-mom, I learned a few lessons today:

1.  It’s OK if you don’t get it right the first time.  Just like anything there is a learning curve.  While some things come very easy to me (I can cook up a gourmet meal like nobody’s business using only ingredients that I have on-hand and never need a recipe), it is just fine if I struggle with a few things here and there.

2.  I am creative.  Maybe I’m not the mom the creates the fun things that go on Pinterest, but I can adapt anything to fit my personality and lifestyle.  And that still makes me feel like I have a teeny-tiny creative bone within me.

3.  I’m not, have never been, or ever will be the mom who can make a memory book, darn a sock, til the garden, and make a pot roast from scratch all before the kids get home from school.  Working outside the home gives me a little more of an excuse, but even when I was a SAHM, I didn’t do those things.  I’ve learned to accept it and focus on my positive mommy/wifey skills.  Besides, I can wear 3″ heels to a field trip and still keep up with twenty 12-year-olds with no problem!

These are the Valentines that Autumn chose to make for her class party.

What are your strengths?  What can you do better than anyone you know?  Focus on those and be happy with what you do and are!  And maybe in the midst of it, try something new.  You never know what you can accomplish, even if you think you’d never be “that girl.”

Summer wish list

It’s almost midnight. But in the spirit of keeping with my word, I’m posting a super short “blog” tonight. I’m not even really sure it can be called a blog since it’s really more of a wish list of  some new faves of mine.  I hope you enjoy it and can find some inspiration and style of your own!

Jeans with super sexy pockets. These jeans by Rock Revival might be a little out of my league, but I think they’re super cute!

Go with everything wedges!  Wedges are comfy and cute and can be worn by just about everyone!

I love being able to change my makeup colors depending on the season and what I’m wearing.  I’m so excited about these new color pencils from Mary Kay!

Sunglasses are such an easy way to change your look depending on your mood.  These Raybans are so much fun!

So many shoes, so little time

I love my kids more than anything! All 4 of them have such unique qualities, that at times, I prefer to be around one more than another. However, the other day, I had a huge proud mommy moment! Having 4 kids, I have a lot of proud mommy moments. But for some reason, this one threw me for a loop and made my heart swell at the same time. What was this mama proud? It wasn’t the fact that my 2 year old is already totally potty-trained. It wasn’t the fact that my 5 year old has started, not only calling me mommy, but the “greatest mommy in the world.” It wasn’t the fact that my 10 year old completed a HUGE reading goal that he set for himself for the last week of school. ALL of these things make me super duper proud to be these kids’ mommy. But this week, the thing that made me so happy and wanting to explode with joy was when my 12 year old daughter asked, “Mommy, can we go to DSW? I’d like to buy a pair of heels for my 6th grade graduation!”

Did you feel my excitement while I typed that out? YES!!! Of course we can go to my favorite store of all time and buy you, my jeans and t-shirt daughter, a pair of heels! I had a blast! She had a blast! The smile glued to her face the whole time let me know that she was dying from excitement inside.

Then came the dilemma. She found 2 pairs that she wanted. Both were the perfect color. Both had the same size heel. Both were on sale. Yes, I’m happy to say, that I have passed down my trait of being able to scope out a deal to my daughter. Which shoes to choose? There were too many. After about 10 minutes of watching her walk through the store with one on the left, the other on the right, she chose.

As she walked up to the counter and handed over her box and gift card, smile still plastered to her face, I knew that this would be a moment I would always remember. Not only because of the shoes. But because we were able to connect on a level that I never imagined would happen. My baby girl, my first born, has started her transition to becoming a young lady. And THAT is what made this mommy so proud!

Put on some make up and look cute!

Do you ever have one of those days where you just want to lay around and do nothing? Well, that was me this morning. I had on my cozy sweats and had a list of reasons why this was a good idea. I didn’t sleep well last night. I don’t feel good. I have loads of laundry to get done. I feel fat. On and on the excuses came. Until finally I said, “Just go put on some make up and try to look cute.” After I dragged my lazy bootie off the couch and upstairs, I went to the bathroom not expecting any great results. Fortunately, I was wrong.

I felt so much better! It’s funny how such a small thing, like putting on make up, changing out of a shlumpy outfit, or making your hair cute, can totally change your attitude. Again, this is one thing that I know works, but finding even the smallest amount of motivation to do it can seem more challenging than the act itself. Especially for stay at home moms.

Sometimes finding a reason to look cute can seem impossible. Especially when we know we’re not leaving the house. Or when you have to get on your hands on knees to clean a toilet or the kitchen floor. Why would you want to put on your skinny jeans and cute top just to get dirty again? For you, that’s who!

YOU have to take care of you. Treat yourself like the wonderful woman God created you to be! So go on! Wear your wedges while you vacuum! Curl your hair to take out the trash! Put on your new summer dress to go to the grocery store! YOU deserve to look like the wonderful woman you are!
